As a professional garage flooring company, we understand the allure of doing it yourself. You can finish your own garage on your own time and potentially save a little money. You can pick up a DIY epoxy floor kit at most hardware stores or find one online, but it is important to know that not all DIY epoxy kits are created equally, and saving a little money up front could end up costing you down the line. Here are a few points to consider when deciding to do it yourself or hire a professional.
Don't do DIY epoxy

PREP

Preparing your garage floor is the most crucial step in the process as it sets the stage for how
the coatings will adhere to the concrete. Incorrect prepping can result in peeling down the line. The best way to properly prep the floor is to use a diamond grinder to grind down the smooth top surface of the concrete. DIY kits may recommend simply washing or acid washing your concrete surface, but this will not create the ideal surface for proper application.  If you hire Global Garage, all you have to do is clear your belongings off the floor… we take care of the rest!

QUALITY

At-home epoxy and polyurethane kits vary in quality and, through our years of experience, we have found that you should order twice as much as you think you will need. Most DIY kits will require multiple coats to properly cover the floor and can be water-based and brittle. Low quality epoxy coatings do not adhere well to the concrete and will discolor over time.  We use only the highest quality polyaspartic coatings available and have perfected the application methods so your floor will last.

TIME

The price of DIY kits may seem appealing at first, but also consider the cost of your time in the final price. DIY epoxy treatments can take anywhere from 7-10 days to fully apply and cure, not including the time it takes to prep the floor. Global Garage can complete most garages in one day, and the garage is ready for use the next day. Also, with our lifetime guarantees, you won’t have to worry about your floor for many years to come. At-home kits are prone to peeling, especially if the floor is not prepped right to begin with. A professional polyaspartic treatment will cost a bit more up front, but we think you’ll be happy with the investment when you don’t have to think about it again.

To be fair… We’re a little biased, but it’s only because we’re so confident that your money and time are
being invested in the right place. We’re really good at this, and we think you’ll be happy when
you choose Global Garage. We’re always available to answer any questions or
concerns you might have, give us a call today.
